In Trinidad and Tobago, over twenty-nine thousand people are living with HIV/AIDS. When most of us imagine the face of HIV/AIDS on the island, we do not envision the hundreds of children living in our communities infected and affected by this disease. In an attempt to give a voice to this silent group, the Trinidad and Tobago Coalition for the Convention on the Rights of The Child (TTCRC) sponsored the production of a film. The filming process itself faced a number of challenges, including the unwillingness of children and young people to speak openly about living with HIV/AIDS because of their fear of repercussions ‘once people knew’. HIV/AIDS stigma is a daily reality for children and adults who live with the disease and it requires our immediate, collective attention if we are to achieve positive change.
Invisible, the resulting TTCRC film production, focuses on the story of a woman named Veronica* and her two children. Both the mother and her young daughter are HIV-positive. Late last year, Veronica lost her job, was evicted from her home and was asked to remove her daughter from pre-school because she and her children are living with HIV/AIDS. At present, she is homeless and her daughter’s health is deteriorating because of this enormously stressful situation. Better than facts and figures could ever do, this story demonstrates the bitter effects of discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.
Having completed the film, the producers have two critical aims. The first is to raise awareness about mothers and children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS by widespread showing of Invisible. In the production, Veronica tells her own story. Thus far, the film has moved audience members, sparked vital discussion and inspired people to take action against HIV/AIDS-stigma.
The second, more immediate goal is to build “Veronica’s House” – a new home for this family. Fortunately, Veronica has recently been given a small piece of land on which, if funds and materials are gathered, a concrete house could be built. An estimate for this house has been completed. Now, Veronica and her family need the generosity of concerned individuals and organizations to put together the resources. Building this house not only gives a new home and a new hope for this family but it also is a symbol of change to a Trinidad and Tobago where people living with HIV/AIDS are loved and supported by citizens instead of being subjected to discrimination and stigma.
